Sunset Shimmer had been a pony of potential. Clever, intelligent, and adept at magic, Princess Celestia had an interest in the young pony's talents and took Sunset Shimmer under her wing as her prized student. Under Celestia's guidence, Sunset Shimmer flourished...to some degree. She became more knowledgeable of the arcane, proving to truly be a prodigal student, but unfortunately...she was also hindered by her selfishness, lacking humility and kindness and instead her intellect made her boastful, prideful, and mean. And it was because of this inherent selfishness of hers that she had once been power-hungry as well, wanting to be an alicorn princess, wanting to rule Equestria with an iron hoof. Sensing that Sunset was a troubled pony, Celestia had banished her from the castle, but Sunset Shimmer escaped through a mirror leading to an alternate (human) world.
It was there that Sunset Shimmer became the typical highschool bully. Egotistical, rude, bossy, the expected traits of a afternoon television special. She would tear apart friendship groups due to outside manipulation, making use of her minions Snips and Snails to do her dirty work. But being the most popular girl in school with a Machiavellian way of thinking wasn't enough; much like a Disney Princess (but in the wrong sort of way), she wanted more. She had planned to steal an element of harmony, harness its power, and create an army of mindless teenage minions to take over Equestria. And she had almost been successful, turning into a literal she-demon that had manifested in her meanness and selfishness. But, she was ultimately stopped, and instead took a turn for...the better.
After being exposed to the potential power of friendship and kindness (and believe me I am not typing this seriously that's just how this canon is I'm aware it's cheesy and ridiculous), Sunset Shimmer immediately took to the path of reformation. She might not have been accepted by the entire school at first, but thanks to her budding friendship with Applejack, Rarity, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, and Fluttershy, people who had seen her at her worst and helped strip her of her power, she became a kinder, more gentle person, but because of her shame and embarrassment, lacked confidence. Before, she had been cocky, egotistical, but now she was ashamed of herself, eager to try to please people and try to make a better name for herself, but easily backing back and shrinking away. She knew that people expected her to just turn back to being mean, that maybe she really was beyond help and would turn into a raging she-demon once more,and it was because of that fear Sunset Shimmer almost became a wilting flower of sorts. She resigned herself to the sidelines, cheered her friends on from the sidelines, and didn't really feel part of the group because despite being friends, she felt like her past would always come back to haunt her.
But being on the outside of her friend group, in a way, had also been beneficial. While she had lost confidence in herself, she remained intelligent as ever, and now with a level head on her shoulders she was able to notice things that other people could not. She noticed that the Dazzlings were manipulating her friends into arguing, she noticed that they were feeding off their anger and trying to weaken the group to overtake the school and harness their latent Equestrian magic. She also became closer with Twilight Sparkle, and bonded over insecurities and thanks to Twilight's friendship once more she regained her confidence to speak up and out, but not with the cockiness she once had exhibited but instead with a confidence built up among friends and a betterment of herself. She isn't perfect, of course, and idolizes Twilight Sparkle to some extent where she still thinks of Twilight as the better pony. And because she compares herself so often to Twilight, this is sometimes a cause of frustration.
In short; at one time, Sunset Shimmer had been a mean, callous, and cruel teenager. A bully who had no friends. But thanks to the (literal) magic of friendship, she did a complete 180 in personality. While she still does have moments of hotheadedness which only now comes out in defense of her friends (it's demonstrated in Friendship Games that she can still snap at someone if she feels her friendgroup is under threat), Sunset Shimmer became a wholly better person. She's a loyal friend, someone who's worked hard to be a kindhearted person, and she is compassionate and genuinely cares for the well-being of others as well as herself.
POWER:
UNICORN MAGIC
Here, Sunset Shimmer is able to have her ability to do magic spells back as she had been able to back when she was a unicorn. But to keep her from being too powerful, she is only able to do basic unicorn spells such as telekinesis to levitate and move objects at whim via magic and create a small aura of light to use to navigate dark places. She will also be able to do more advanced unicorn magic like teleportation where she is able to teleport to a desired location at whim, limited to places she has already been, and places under ten miles away. She cannot teleport to distant locations. She will also be able to cast beams of magic that act as a physical attack, or use magic to act as a physical barrier to protect herself from oncoming attacks.
Because of her magic she will also be aware of when her mind is being read or if someone is using magic or a power in an attempt to manipulate her.
EMPATH
Sunset Shimmer is able to read the thoughts, emotions, and even see memories of individuals she's able to touch. She is also able to exert her emotions onto other people through touch as well, as shown by exerting her positive and supportive emotions onto Twilight Sparkle in order to give her the confidence to use her powers.
TRANSFORMATION
Sunset Shimmer will be able to transform and (AND BEAR WITH ME THIS IS THE ACTUAL CANON TERM THEY USE....) "Pony Up." What this entails is that Sunset Shimmer's hair will grow into a longer, more pronouned pony tail which gives off the impression of a...wait for it...pony's tail, and she will also have pony ears protruding from her head. Her outfit will change too because Equestria Girls is basically a magical girl cartoon combined with a toy company wanting to sell you more dolls. [outfit reference: on the right]

[in the past, the cheers and unadulterated enthusiasm of a crowd would have been just what Sunset Shimmer wanted. in fact, despite herself, she feels a small familiar surge of pride as a group of teenage girls approach her, compliment her hair and clothes, and ask to take her picture. at first, she's more than happy to oblige. and while it's a relief knowing she'll start fresh and new, knowing that the people in this world know nothing of her, she feels a sort of apprehension watch over her as she finds herself enjoying this attention entirely too much. she's better than this. the popularity is gratifying, but it's starting to touch upon a part of her she's tried so hard to swallow; she doesn't want to make the same mistakes here.
nervously, Sunset excuses herself from another group wanting in on the excitement, apologizing and brushing past the crowd and keeping her head low as she pops the collar of her jacket. somehow she manages to make her way to the malt shop without any other interruptions.
